For Micky Ward (Mark Wahlberg), boxing is a family affair. His tough-as-nails mother is his manager. His half-brother, Dicky (Christian Bale), once a promising boxer himself, is his very unreliable trainer. Despite Micky's hard work, he is losing and, when the latest fight nearly kills him, he follows his girlfriend's advice and splits from the family. Then Micky becomes a contender for the world title and he -- and his family -- earns a shot at redemption.
3. The Fighter (2010) - Massachusetts Film Office
Dec 11, 2010 · The Fighter, directed by David O. Russell and based on the true story of the junior welterweight Micky Ward, is quick on its feet and packs a mighty punch.
Sticking fairly closely to the facts of Mr. Ward’s story, “The Fighter” plants itself firmly in his native terrain of Lowell, Mass., immersing the viewer in the sensorium of a hard-luck industrial town left to languish in the backwash of globalization. You can almost smell the weariness and desperation rising off of the tar that Micky, in his day job as a road paver, spreads on streets lined with sagging three-decker houses and faded storefronts. A city with a distinguished place in American labor and literary history — it was the birthplace of Jack Kerouac — Lowell in the early 1990s, when “The Fighter” unfolds, is blighted by poverty, unemployment and the crack epidemic, which has claimed Micky’s half brother, Dicky Eklund, as a casualty. Christian Bale's performance as Mr. Eklund is astonishing. Mr. Wahlberg gives a brilliantly quiet performance, underplaying so gracefully and with so little vanity that you almost forget that the movie is supposed to be about Micky.

Around the time of its release, I did a post about David O. Russell’s “The Fighter” and discussed one particular plot element that’s of particular interest, the prominence given to the making and broadcast of an HBO documentary about the ex-boxer Dickie Eklund (Christian Bale) that he expects to depict his attempt at a comeback and turns out to depict his crack addiction. The stories of how movies come to be made are often both absorbing and revealing, and Rob Feld’s account, in the new issue of Written By, of the production history of “The Fighter” points remarkably in a wide range of directions to show how one project both influences many major artistic careers and bears the traces of surprising influences (and, along the way, suggests, as I intuited, that the prominence of the HBO story in the movie is very much a Russellian touch).
