A: Hi, We are the manufacturer of Clorox Pool&Spa products. Each 1inch tablet treats about 1,000 gallons, so that pool would need 5 initially to maintain a 1-4ppm residual.

Shock is chlorine, in a high dose, meant to shock your pool and raise the chlorine level quickly. Chlorine tabs (placed in a chlorinator, floater, or skimmer basket) maintain a chlorine residual in the water. You do need to use both tabs and shock.

How much chlorine to add depends on the type you're using. But since tablets are the most common, we can say that the rule of thumb for how much chlorine to add is two 3-inch tablets per 10,000 gallons, or one 3-inch tablet per 5,000 gallons. The goal is to have a chlorine level at 1 to 3 parts per million (ppm).

Are all pool chlorine brands the same? The short answer is no! While chlorine tablets may look the same across the board, there is usually a big difference in terms of quality and ingredients.

It usually falls between 10-12.5%, with 12.5% being the most common value. Adding 0.13 ounces of pure chlorine to 1,000 gallons of water will raise the chlorine levels by 1 ppm.

As a general rule, waiting for about 30 minutes after adding chlorine and algaecides is recommended, while shock treatments may require a longer waiting period. Use the overnight hours for the chemicals to work to minimize your wait time for swimming.
